BALTIMORE,Md. — On Thursday, December 8, 2016, City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young and Councilmembers will receive the oath of office during a ceremony to mark the start of the 72nd Baltimore City Council.
The ceremony will take place at the War Memorial Building (101 N. Gay Street) on Thursday, December 8, 2016. Members of the public and elected officials will be allowed to enter the War Memorial Building on the Gay Street side by accessing the front steps beginning at 9 a.m. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to enter the War Memorial Building on the Lexington Street side of the building.
Members of the media will be allowed to enter the building at 8:30 a.m. to begin setup.
The ceremony will begin promptly at 10 a.m. The day’s theme is “Strengthening Neighborhoods Through Partnerships.”
All attendees are encouraged to take public transportation, including MTA’s busses, light rail and subway system and the Charm City Circulator’s new Green Line, which stops conveniently at the northwest corner of City Hall.
In preparation for the event, the following streets will be closed to through traffic on Thursday, December 8, 2016 with detours and parking restrictions in effect:
Street Closure from 6:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
· Lexington Street, between Gay Street and N. Frederick Street (event checkpoint*)
Street Closures from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
· Fayette Street exit ramp from I-83 southbound
· Fayette Street from President Street to Guilford Avenue – vehicles traveling westbound on Fayette Street will detour left or right onto President Street
· Gay Street from Baltimore to Saratoga Streets
· Northbound Holliday Street must turn left onto Fayette Street; no right turns allowed from Holliday Street onto Fayette Street
· Vehicles will not be permitted to turn onto eastbound Saratoga Street at Gay Street
Large bags, backpacks, signage, food and beverages are prohibited at the ceremony. All items are subject to search and inspection. There will be no parking around the War Memorial Building.
