— On Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at its last meeting before commencement, the Morgan State University Board of Regents voted unanimously to re-elect current Chairman Kweisi Mfume, along with Rev. Dr. Frances Murphy Draper as vice chair and Tyrone D. Taborn as secretary. Each continues in the role held during their most recent term. Regent Mfume has served as chair since July 2013.

“I’m honored to be given the opportunity to continue in my current capacity and build upon the work accomplished by this board,” said Chairman Mfume. “I thank the members of the board for their vote of confidence and for their commitment to following through on a shared vision for this university.”

Additionally, the Board of Regents discussed a number of issues relevant to the growth and ongoing success of Morgan State University as the premier public urban research university in Maryland and took action on several of them. Board members voted to implement a two percent tuition increase that will take effect in the fall of 2015. The increase, which applies the same to both in-state and out-of-state students, coincides with the State’s call for tuition increases for all statewide public institutions and is among the lowest of those announced.

“In order to be able to compete in this market and continue to provide the resources and services necessary to provide our students with the best quality education, adjustments had to be made to our tuition rate,” said President David Wilson. “We recognize the economic challenges faced by some of our students and their parents and we are exploring ways to lessen the impact on those who would be most affected.”

Also during its recent meeting, the Board voted unanimously to rename the University Honors Program to the Dr. Clara Adams Honors College. The name change recognizes the long-time service to the university and contribution to academia by Morgan alumna Dr. Clara Adams (Class of ’54). Dr. Adams joined the university’s faculty in 1959 and currently serves as special assistant to the president of Morgan State.

“Morgan will always occupy a special place in my heart and for the university to recognize me in this way is truly an honor. I am grateful and humbled beyond words,” said Dr. Adams.
