Emergency crews are at an elevator rescue in the area of 3150 Mercier Street in Kansas City.
Firefighters tell KCTV5 News that 18 people are trapped in the elevator.
Kansas City Fire Department Chief Paul Berardi tweeted out that six ambulances were on the scene.
Dean Realty Co. owns the caves where the elevators are located.
According to Acting CEO Walt Clements, there are two elevators used by the facility. The elevator involved in the rescue is only supposed to have six people or less. According to Clements, there “are bold signs” that elevator riders can see that state only 6 people or less can ride.
When the elevator is overloaded with weight, an automatic switch is triggered to shut off the elevator.
The 18 people were heading to the Cave Bouldering Gym when the elevator stopped working.
They were stuck on the elevator for about a half hour.
Some of those trapped were international students part of an exchange program. They were heading down to The Cave Bouldering Gym.
