The Inaugural Coretta Scott King Birthday Social Justice Service is Saturday, April 29, 2017.

Dr. Barbara Reynolds, civil rights activist, author of the new widely-acclaimed memoir, Coretta: My Life, My Love, My Legacy, and mentee of the late Civil Rights icon Mrs. King, will host 3 FREE events during this inaugural Birthday Week Celebration, April 2 1 – April 29, 2017. Mrs. King would have been 90 years young and still bringing her voice to the conversation! The week’s events include a Social Justice Service at Howard’s Rankin Chapel, a live youth empowerment gathering at Gunston Middle School, and a viral birthday celebration invitation where people can connect on social media using #HappyBirthdayMrsKing.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King was one of the greatest non-violent civil and human rights activists ever to live in America. Mrs. King was tireless as an advocate, spending mammoth amounts of time working with the United Nations, South Africa, India, women’s organizations, congregations, community organizations, and causes. Marking the 90th birthday of a singular woman whose light beams as a mom, wife, and chosen advocate on a universal path that resonates as much today as it did in times past.

During the Social Justice Service on April 29th, the first Coretta Scott King Eternal Flame Award will be presented and the powerful “Coretta’s 7 Lasting Words Ceremony” will be presented for the first-time ever. Invited dignitaries include D.C. Councilmembers, international ambassadors, civil rights and community organizations, and congregations across denominations. A book signing will follow the service at 3 p.m. benefiting the A Teacher’s Work Is Never Done (ATWINDS) Foundation.

On April 27th, all are invited to a digital birthday party where people are encouraged to change their social media profile picture to their favorite of Mrs. King with the hashtag #HappyBirthdayMrsKing.

RSVPs appreciated.
