HBCU Round-Up: Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference – MEAC Softball

Morgan State sophomore Damali Young was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, the conference announced today. Teammate Amy Begg earned Pitcher of the Week honors, while Ryan Jackson, of Bethune-Cookman, and Taylor Warrick, of Hampton were named Co-Rookies of the Week.

Young (OF, 5-2, So., Westampton, N.J.) batted .529 (9-of-17), drove in eight RBI and scored a MEAC-best 11 runs in six games last week. She belted two home runs in a three-game series against Norfolk State. The first, a two-run home run, sealed the 9-0 victory in six innings. The second was a three-run home run to give the Bears a sweep over the Spartans. Young also stole seven bases last week to break the single-season school record with 32.

Begg (P, 6-2, Jr., Christchurch, New Zealand) went 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA against UMBC and Norfolk State. She pitched a total of 26.1 innings, in five games, while surrendering no runs and striking out 24. Begg held Norfolk State scoreless in all three games to earn the Bears’ first ever sweep over the Spartans.

Jackson (INF, 5-6, Fr., Chino Hills, Calif.) went 4-for-11 behind the plate in three wins over North Carolina Central. She led the team in slugging percentage (1.182), while recording three home runs in the series. Two of Jackson’s home runs came in the series finale and accounted for both of her hits that day.

Warrick (OF, 5-8, Fr., Mount Laurel, N.J.) recorded a .500 batting average in five games last week. She went 8-for-12 with two doubles, two triples, three stolen bases and six RBI in three games against Delaware State. Warrick was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate in the 8-0 win against Delaware State, while driving in two runs.

Sabrina Anguiano (B-CU) allowed just two hits in a complete-game shutout over North Carolina Central.

Brianna Sanders (B-CU) went 3-for-4 at the plate, with a home run, in the 10-2 win over North Carolina Central.

Cayla Brown (CSU) notched a team-high eight hits, including one home run, in five games.

Madison Didion (CSU) fanned a season-high eight batters in a win over Howard.

Kimberly Evans (CSU) tied a season-high three hits against Howard.

Desiree Moreno (DSU) went 4-for-5 with five RBI in the 6-5 victory over Hampton.

Amber Fullwood (FAMU) belted two home runs, including a two-run home run, in the 5-2 win over North Carolina A&T State.

Tahlia Snider (FAMU) threw three scoreless innings, allowing no hits or walks, in the 9-7 victory against North Carolina A&T State.

Jamesia Stoudemire (FAMU) batted .500, with a home run, against North Carolina A&T State.

Emory Brooklyn (HOW) slammed a three-run home run, to end the game in five innings, against Coppin State.

Allison Anderson (MDES) went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored against Norfolk State.

Tori Jo Brown (MDES) hit her first career home run in a victory over Norfolk State.

Adrienne Guerra (MDES) pitched her fourth complete-game shutout victory, with eight strikeouts, against Norfolk State.

Lauren Dunlow (NCAT) recorded two hits, including one double, against Florida A&M.

Alyssa Green (NCAT) batted .500 and stole one base against Florida A&M.

Zadaisha Waddell (NCAT) threw six innings, scattering seven hits with two strikeouts, against Florida A&M.
