The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), partnered with the City of Norfolk, TowneBank, and Norfolk Public Schools honored W.H. Taylor Elementary School, who was the winner of this year’s Read with MEac competition.

Read with MEac is a citywide reading contest that encourages students in Norfolk Public Schools to read as much as possible. Participants’ reading progress was monitored through the Renaissance Star Reading program from September 20. 2016 through February 6, 2017.

“Something that is a pillar of what we’re doing in Norfolk is a focus on literacy,” said Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Melinda Boone. “To have this partnership with the MEAC, and to reinforce what we’re trying to say with literacy, is phenomenal.”

This year’s program, now in its ninth year, was created by the MEAC’s Senior Women Administrators (SWA) to promote the love of reading.

W.H. Taylor Elementary School had the highest activity participation during the contest.

As the first-place school, they received a check for $2,000 and a party at their school. Student-athletes, cheerleaders and mascots from MEAC institutions helped celebrate the students.

Fourth-grade student Kenneth Berger was honored for being the competition’s top reader for W. H. Taylor Elementary.

“It’s important for all students to feel success and I think that reading was the key to success for our children,” said Charlene Feliton, W.H. Taylor Elementary School principal. “I’m very grateful to the MEAC and its HBCUs for celebrating our students and the importance of reading in today’s generation.”
