BALTIMORE,Md. — (Nov. 16, 2016) — Jairus Lyles came off the bench to lead four players in double –figures with 24 points in UMBC’s 90-68 men’s basketball win over visiting Delaware State last night. Read more of the game’s highlights below.
- The Retrievers improved to 3-0, while the Hornets have dropped their last two to fall to 1-2 this season.
- UMBC was 33-for-61 from the field (54.1%), including 10-of-21 on three-point shots (47.6%).
- Delaware State shot 35.3% from the field (24-68) and 20.7% from three-point range (6-29).
- Lyles was nine-for-14 from the field and had a game-high four three-pointers for the Retrievers. K.J Maura added 19 points and led all players with six assists, while Nolan Gerrity (13) and Will Darley (10) also reached double figures in scoring for UMBC.
- DeAndre Haywood scored 20 points for the second straight game to lead the Hornets and raise his team-best average to 18 points per game.
- DeVaughn Mallory had a season-high 13 points on six-of-six shooting from the field for DSU. He also pulled down a team- best seven rebounds in the game. Mallory has made 11 of his 19 shots from the field this season to lead the Hornets with a .579 shooting percentage.
- Kavon Waller added 11 points for Delaware State, highlighted by three three-point field goals. Waller is tops on the Hornets with nine three-pointers this season (9-for-16).
- The score was tied at 11 before UMBC took control of the game. The Retrievers outscored the Hornets 23-6 over the next five-and-a-half-minutes, and opened up a 34-17 lead on a lay-up by Lyles with 7:33 left in the first half.
- UMBC led 43-23 at the break.
- The Hornets scored 10 of the first 13 points in the second half, and pulled to within 46-33 on a three-pointer by Devin Morgan, but could get no closer the rest of the way.
- Morgan had two three-pointers in the contest to extend his streak to 31 games with at least one three-pointer.
- The Hornets will also play their next seven games on the road, beginning with a first-time visit to Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 21. Game time is 8 p.m. Eastern in Lafayette, La.
