BOWIE, Md. — Richmond jumped on the Baysox early, scoring four first inning runs and eight total runs in the first three innings in a 9-4 win over Bowie Sunday afternoon to take the four game series. Making his first start of the season for the Baysox, Terry Doyle struggled, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in three innings.
Richmond’s second baseman Kelby Tomlinson led off the game with a bunt single, followed by another bunt single by Rando Moreno. As Tomlinson tried to take third on the bunt, Doyle threw to catcher Rossmel Perez who was covering third base. Perez dropped the throw and was charged with an error after Tomlinson was declared safe to leave runners on first and third. Designated hitter Mac Williamson knocked in the first runs of the game with a double to center field and Mitch Delfino followed with a ground out that advanced Williamson to third. Right fielder Devin Harris then singled to bring Williamson home before Myles Schroder followed with another single. Javier Herrera flew out to center field to move Harris to third and Daniel Carbonell brought him home with a line drive single to center field to give Richmond a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
Richmond struck again in the top of the second on a single by Moreno followed by Williamson’s third home run of the season, putting the Flying Squirrels up 6-0.
The Baysox woke up in the bottom of the second thanks to a single from Sharlon Schoop and an RBI double from right fielder Quincy Latimore, making the score 6-1.
Richmond furthered their lead again in the third inning. Herrera hit a ground rule double to left field and Eliezer Zambrano hit the Flying Squirrels’ second home run of the game to give them an 8-1 lead.
The Baysox bit into Richmond’s lead again, in the bottom of the third. Ozzie Martinez led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Richmond’s Jack Snodgrass. Davis hit a single to put men on first and second and Chris O’Brien then singled to load the bases before Schoop singled to bring Martinez home making the score 8-2.
Ben Rowen came in for Doyle in the top of the fourth, but the Flying Squirrels kept the runs coming. Williamson singled to start the inning, leaving him a triple short of the cycle, but was forced out at second on the next play by Delfino. Harris hit his 11th double of the year to bring home Delfino and give Richmond a 9-2 lead.
After the fourth, Rowen pitched three scoreless innings for the Baysox and four innings total. He was replaced by Ashur Tolliver in the eighth inning who pitched a scoreless final two innings.
The Baysox scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth as Richmond reliever Stephen Johnson struggled. Ronarsy Ledesma hit his first Double-A single to lead-off the bottom of the inning. Latimore followed with a single and Johnson walked Esposito to load the bases with no outs. Martinez hit into a fielder’s choice to force Ledesma out at home, but the bases remained loaded, now with one out. Johnson issued another walk to Glynn Davis to bring in the Baysox third run of the game. Richmond then replaced Johnson with Joan Gregorio, in hopes he would be able to close out the game. Mike Yastrzemski hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Esposito, which would become the final run of the game. Gregorio closed out the game with a pop out from designated hitter Chris O’Brien, and the Flying Squirrels took game four of the series with a score of 9-4.
Richmond starter Jack Snodgrass earned the win after throwing seven innings and giving up two runs on seven hits.
The Baysox are gearing up for a week-long road trip after an off-day on Monday. Parker Bridwell (1-2, 4.98), who leads the Baysox pitching staff in strikeouts, takes the mound for the first game against Trenton on Tuesday.
