BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Ravens agreed to a three year contract with local product Kyle Arrington yesterday. Arrington was released by his the New England Patriots. He spent six seasons with the Patriots, playing in 86 games. Arrington posted 292 tackles, 48 pass breakups, nine interceptions, five forced fumbles and three sacks. His best season was 2011 when he had seven interceptions and 15 pass breakups.
Arrington struggled against the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl, his last game with the Patriots. He was benched in favor of rookie corner Malcolm Butler. Butler sealed the victory for the Patriots after making an interception at the goal line.
Arrington attended Gwynn Park High School in Maryland where he played football, track and field and basketball. He was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Hofstra University. He is one of the last football players to make it to the NFL from the now defunct Hofstra football team. Arrington spent a season on the practice squad with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before sticking with the Patriots.
Terms of the contract have not been released but according to sources of Aaron Wilson from the Baltimore Sun, the deal is said to average approximately $2.5 million over three years. Arrington will instantly be thrust into the competition for the nickel corner spot on the Ravens. When healthy, Asa Jackson will be the biggest competition for Arrington. Jackson will be playing for a new contract this season.
The move is one that was foreshadowed on a conference call that head coach John Harbaugh and General Manager Ozzie Newsome had with season ticket holders. Both of them made it clear that the roster is not set and that they would like to add some players in the secondary. Newsome said that he was in contact with representatives for some veteran free agents.
