— The Banneker-Douglass Museum, Maryland’s official institution of African American heritage, seeks participants now for an exhibition to open in May 2016. Jumping the Broom: Celebrating African American Weddings will examine the ways in which weddings have been celebrated in African American communities throughout Maryland. Those African American couples interesting in showcasing their love story in this exhibit are asked to contact BDM Curator of Exhibitions Shakia Gullette by July 20, 2015 at Shakia.Gullette@maryland.gov

Jumping the Broom: Celebrating African American Weddings explores the cultural traditions, fashion practices, and unique aspects of close-knit African American celebrations. The exhibit also considers the importance of the family unit and how each family celebrates moments of transition and unification.

The BDM seeks participants who meet the following criteria:

• Must be current Maryland state residents

• Both spouses must identify as African American

• Married for 50 years or more

• Both husband and wife must still be living

• Must have photographs that document the wedding and 50th anniversary.

Those interested in participating are asked to submit a brief narrative explaining when/where the couple met and the dates of their marriage. Please feel free to share any additional special memories in your narrative that may highlight your journey towards love.
