Many of us have a list of things that we want to accomplish during our lifetime— seeing Stevie Wonder perform is on my list. On Thursday, April 9, 2015, I had the opportunity to do just that here in Baltimore at the Royal Farms Arena.
In town to perform music from the classic and brilliantly crafted albums “Songs in the Key of Life,” Wonder had a packed and diverse audience up dancing, singing, and reminiscing. There was even a couple who got engaged at the show. That’s the power of music. That’s the power of Stevie Wonder. If you were present, you would swear you were listening to a recording because Stevie sounds that awesome live. Wonder was his very charismatic, charming, and fun self. He is about taking you on a musical journey with love, pride, emotion, and realism.
The year was 1976 when “Songs in the Key of Life” was released. The key to the show wasn’t the music, but it is what Mr. Wonder shared with the audience before beginning. Taking a shining moment to speak on racism and hatred he said, “If you are hating on someone for being different for the color of your skin, their beliefs, or whatever it is, you are blocking your blessings from God.” That was a powerful moment!
