This is definitely the year for independent authors and especially authors of children’s books. Vonnya Pettigrew has written a very necessary book for parents of small children who are attending school.

“The story of Lil’ V is loosely based off my experiences at school,” said Pettigrew. “The character is me. The school in the book is where I attended. I wanted to write books, this being my first in a series, dealing with the issues that kids go through especially in this day and time. I want to inspire dialogue between the parents and their child.”

“Lil’V Walks Home From School” does just that. Lil’V is ready to walk home from school, but her parents give her rules and instructions. One of the aspects of the book I like is that the family is multi-racial which is the case in today’s society. The illustrations are by Alex T. Lee and they are awesome. Add this to your child’s summer reading and be sure to follow up with a discussion.
