Washington D.C — Senior Denikka Brent of the University of the District of Columbia Women’s Basketball team was named the program’s first ever Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association First Team All-East Region performer as voted on by the region’s sports information directors.
With this honor, Brent is now on the ballot for the Division II All-America team which will be selected and released later this month. She is joined on the First Team by the East Region Player of the Year (also the Northeast-10 Player of the Year) from University of New Haven, Aquillin Hayes, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year Emily Caswell of Caldwell College, the East Coast Conference Player of the Year from Queens College, Madison Rowland, and Adelphi’s Kelly Mannix.
Brent (Mechanical Engineering – Chesapeake, VA/Booker T. Washington HS) was the ECC Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-ECC selection this season as she led the Firebirds to a school-record 25-win season, a regular season conference championship and UDC’s 3rd NCAA Tournament berth in four years.
At the end of the regular season, she finished ranked among the ECC leaders in multiple categories. Offensively, she was 3rd in scoring (17.3 ppg), 2nd in field goals made(184), 7th in FG percentage (48-percent) and 8th in offensive rebounds (70). Defensively, Brent was 2nd in the ECC and in the top-25 nationally with 2.64 steals per-game, 9th with 7.7 rebounds per-game and 10th with 1.5 blocks per-game.
Along the way, she earned a BennettRank National Gem of the Week honor for her performance vs. NYIT where she registered 31 points, 12 rebounds, five steals, three blocks and two assists in a thrilling, 98-95 triple-overtime conference road victory. In total, Brent scored in double-figures 28 times this season and had eight double-figure rebounding games, seven games of five steals or more and 16 multi-block games.
