A Day at the Races— ‘A Hat & Glove Affair: Hollywood Glamour’

The Epsilon Omega Foundation, Inc. the charitable arm of the Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. sponsored their third “Day at the Races on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at the famed Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Maryland. The theme of the sold out event was “A Hat & Glove Affair: Hollywood Glamour.”

The event which boasted close to 200 guests from as far as Prince George’s County, the District of Columbia, and Virginia was a sight to behold! The event consisted of a lavish brunch menu with live horseracing and an incredible raffle to benefit their scholarship program. The Epsilon Omega Foundation, Inc. grants four year college scholarships to high achieving community service minded high school students from Baltimore city annually. The event also featured a “Rip the Runway” styled Hatitude contest where both men and women participated. Attendees were encouraged to bring their best rendition of the event’s theme “Hollywood Glamour” by Baltimore’s famed fashion icon Travis Winkey of Baltimore Fashion Week. Attendees came dressed to impress in the latest fashions to much fanfare from onlookers!

This year Mano Swartz Furs, a returning sponsor, donated a fur vest valued at $1,000.00 to the Foundation in support of the scholarship raffle! Marjae Hat’s, Smyth Jeweler’s, Charles “Chizel It” Harris, Basignani winery and Linganore Winecellars all returned with generous donations this year as well. An exciting edition to this year’s donations was a luxury spa gift set with included over $200 products and services by Scrub Nail Boutique! All the proceeds from the raffle go to benefit the scholarship fund; tickets for the fur vest and the lovely pink and green hat by Marjae are ongoing until June 14th 2014.

Carol Robinson is the president and Cylia E. Lowe, Esq, who initiated this event, is the Day at the Races chairman as well as the fundraising chairman for the Epsilon Omega Foundation, Inc. Cylia E. Lowe stated. “This year’s event added more flair and fun! Mr. Travis Winkey was a wonderful addition and our sponsors did not disappoint which created a win/win experience for members and the community at large as we were able to come together to party with a purpose.

Alpha Kappa Alpha recognizes the importance of education in the advancement of one’s socioeconomic development so by creating events like this to support those efforts, supports our city’s most brilliant but needy students so they can achieve their dreams.”

Epsilon Omega Foundation’s Scholarship committee chairman Shirley Hill explained, “Epsilon Omega scholarship winners have gone on to major in a variety of concentrations such as: Sociology, Criminal Justice, Accounting, Environmental Research, and Medicine. We are proud to know we had a hand in helping them become attorneys, teachers, professors, scientist, and nurses. In all, we have donated over $276,000.00 through the years and we appreciate the community’s support in being of service to all mankind.”

Epsilon Omega Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit and tax exempt, 501 (c) (3), corporation established to acquire resources to support and promote programs and services to meet the changing needs of citizens of the Baltimore metropolitan community and beyond.
