BALTIMORE — This week’s entrepreneur of the week is no stranger to seeing what entrepreneurship is all about. Ray Quick watched his father, Clarence Quick, perform with the Dell Vikings, who had Doo-Wop hits including “Come Go With Me” and “Whispering Bells.” In 2006 Ray decided to start writing books, which eventually lead him to write the stage play, “He’s Not Mine, She’s Not Mine.”
“I used to watch my dad perform and not think one thing about it. It wasn’t until 1983 when it hit me, that my dad was famous. I had no idea that I was learning something from him until I started working for myself,” said Quick. In the 90s Ray dabbled in the music business with a few hits “High School Sweetheart” and “Never Give Up On Lovin.” “Once the music started moving in a certain direction, I had to choose, so I chose music,” said Quick, who was attending Cheyney University at the time.
Fast forward to 2006. Quick was working on a variety of projects while working at T.Rowe Price. “The projects I was working on, were something that I felt needed to be addressed. I wanted to give the people something not just entertain them but educate them as well.” The issue of health and family bonding is something that was personal and true. Hence the project which is now a screenplay, “He’s Not Mine, She’s Not Mine.”
“This will be the first for folks as this stage play is a drama, with just a taste of comedy, because it is dealing with real core issues, kidney disease which is never discussed in the black community and blended families. We live in a society where there is a stepparent and children involved. Something else that never is discussed. So this play will be something that will have people talking” details Quick.
He tells other entrepreneurs to be persistent. “Never give up. I went homeless trying to achieve my dream. You find out who you are when this happens and who your real family and friends are. I would like to thank Ms. Mae Woods, because without her, I would not be here. She gave me money and food. She is also a big part of this performance. So to my fellow entrepreneurs, keep pushing, God has a plan for you.”
