BALTIMORE — Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced that job seeker resources continue to be available for unemployed city residents in light of the recent expiration of the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program. Approximately 25,000 Maryland residents will be affected— including 5,000 Baltimore City residents because these unemployment benefits were not extended.
“Unfortunately when extended unemployment insurance expires, many Baltimore job seekers will fall further behind in their recovery from the nation’s economic downturn,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. “I hope Congress will pass a retroactive extension of these benefits when it reconvenes in January, but in any event, it is important that residents use the Career Center Network services to improve their employability skills and best position themselves for sustainable careers.”
The Mayor’s Office of Employment Development (MOED) will continue to assist job seekers to develop occupational skills, as well as to prepare for and connect to job opportunities. MOED’s Career Center Network is comprised of three full-service One-stop Career Centers and five city-funded neighborhood-based Community Job Hubs.
More than 20,000 unemployed and underemployed residents are served annually, where they access a variety of workforce development services that improve their skills and help them find jobs that lead to sustainable careers.
These workforce development services include: Ooccupational skill development training opportunities; digital career assessments and job search; registration in state-wide Maryland Workforce Exchange; resume writing and interviewing workshops; computer training at digital learning labs; and GED or adult basic education.
