BALTIMORE — Baltimore Attorney and Baltimore City Orphans’ Court Judge Lewyn Scott Garrett awards karate uniforms to kids at John Eager Howard Recreation Center during their Christmas celebration. Garrett, who has volunteered as a karate instruction for 17 years at the center, awarded the uniforms to 11 students that successfully completed his class this session.
A 5th degree black belt himself, Garrett says the karate program provides a safe haven for kid after school while teaching the core principles of martial arts— self defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental, physical and spiritual development.
Affectionately known as ‘Miss Cookie,” Carolyn Newton, the director of John Eager Howard Recreation Center says Garrett teaches up to 45 kids each class on the two days a week he volunteers at the center.
Located in Reservoir Hill, John Eager Howard Recreation Center offers numerous programs for kids from low income families and is recognized as one of the top recreation centers in Baltimore City.
