Continental Societies host a jazzy afternoon

The Anne Arundel County chapter of the Continental Societies, Inc. hosted the third annual jazz brunch on Saturday, October 5, 2013 in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

The brunch event featured live jazz throughout the afternoon performed by local artists. The brunch also recognized this year’s William Reid Jazzman Scholarship recipient, Kayla Currie.

Performers included local jazz artist Agathus “Griff” Griffin of Pumphrey, Md; Walter Caldwell of Pasadena; and father and son duo Ramacille and Brandon Johnson of Baltimore. The afternoon also featured live jazz from Harry Hunt of Tennessee and his son Harry Hunt Jr. of Chicago. Harry Jr. has toured with multiplatinum artist Tony Toni Tone playing keyboard, organ and the violin. Father Harry Sr. of Memphis has also played with music heavyweights including, The BarKays, Otis Redding, David Porter and Isaac Hayes.

William Reid Jazzman Scholarship recipient and 2013 Meade High School graduate Kayla Currie performed an inspiring rendition of Ava Maria. A sophomore at Radford University, Currie said she hopes to one day be a music therapist and a professional singer.

Chapter President Shirley R. White said she that she was delighted to have Continental members, family, and regional executive members in attendance to support the jazz event and the scholarship. Support came from both local members and regional members from other states including, Parliament Regional Director Mary Grant, 1st vice Regional Director Venida Hamilton, Regional Director Brenda V. Johnson and Regional Financial Director Gwendolyn Jefferson.

The Continental Societies, Incorporated is an international public service organization dedicated to the socioeconomic and cultural welfare of underprivileged children and youth. The Continental Societies Inc. has 43 chapters in 17 states in the Continental USA, District of Columbia and Bermuda and is continuing to grow.
