As we had into the summer months, expect a lot of changes, news, and information for HBCU sports. The Baltimore Times will be keeping you updated as you continue to support our Historical Black Colleges and Universities. Here’s a look at what’s happening this week:

Morgan State Bears: With football season just around the corner, the Morgan State Bears have one player college football teams will be keeping an eye on. College Football Performance Awards, the largest awards organization in D-I college football, recently announced its watch list for the 2013 CFPA Defensive Back Award, and Morgan’s Joe Rankin earned a spot on the list. Rankin, a 2012 All-MEAC selection, ranked tied in the MEAC with 5 interceptions (T-1st), 11 pass deflections (T-4th) to go along with 46 tackles and blocked a field goal last season.

University of the District of Columbia Firebirds: University of the District of Columbia Interim President, Dr. James E. Lyons, Sr. and Director of Athletics, Patricia Thomas, announced that Michael Riley has been hired to lead the University of the District of Columbia men’s basketball program. Riley is a Washington, DC native and a graduate from Cardozo High School, where he was a standout guard on the men’s basketball team. Riley earned team Defensive Player of the Year honors while at Cardozo and was also selected Most Valuable Player during his senior year. Riley was inducted into the Cardozo High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.

Coppin State Eagles: The Coppin State women’s tennis team has received a Public Recognition Award from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for earning a high score in the most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) compilation. The women’s tennis team was recognized by the NCAA for the third consecutive year for earning an APR score that ranks in the top 10 percent nationally during the 2011-12 academic years. The Eagles also were recognized for the 2009-10 academic years and the 2010-11 academic years. Congrats to Coppin State for putting students first when it comes to athletics.

University Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks: Five-time National Champion Kristina Frahm has decided to step down as the head coach of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) bowling team and return home to Illinois to work in her chosen field of accounting. Frahm is one of the most decorated persons in athletic history at UMES. As a player she won three National Championships, the NCAA in 2008 & 2011 and also won the USBC Collegiate Championship in 2011. She was a four-time All-America performer and a National Rookie of the Year. As a coach she guided the Hawks to another NCAA title in 2012 and another USBC trophy in 2013.
