— The Western Anne Arundel Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (WASP) recently announced the winner of its “Substance Abuse Prevention Media Contest” held for Meade High School students. Winner Yigi “Yvette” Yu is a 2013 graduate of Meade High. She was presented a prize of $2,000 from WASP Coordinator and Hands of Hope CEO Sherry Medley and WASP Chairperson Derrick Farmer. She also received a citation of merit from the Department of Health. Yu plans to attend the University of Maryland in College Park in the fall.

“Substance abuse is a problem among our youth and young adults,” said WASP Chairperson Derrick Farmer. “The contest requested original posters, canvases and videos that brought awareness to the problem and encouraged young people to make healthy choices by staying away from drugs and underage drinking.”

Yu’s poster, “Your Future Is Your Choice” was selected by a panel of WASP Coalition members and Anne Arundel County Public Schools personnel and alumni. She was interviewed on AACPS Television to highlight her artwork with its important anti-substance abuse theme.

WASP’s mission is to prevent alcohol and other drug use among youth and to promote safe, healthy behaviors. WASP is funded through a grant from the Anne Arundel County Department of Health.
