OL Williams

A star in your backyard includes OL Williams, a unique musician committed to doing God’s work. His gift started at a young age when his piano playing father bought him a piano and lessons. He went to a community college where he studied piano theory with other teachers who helped him to develop a neo R&B gospel sound. His cousin was the late great R&B jazz singer Phyllis Hyman. He continues to write and produce songs for other R&B groups, such as rock ‘n roll Hall of Famer, Eddie Rich.

Williams developed a passion for writing and producing spiritual songs and music. Now when you listen to OL Williams’ GS Project music, you’ll know that he’s committed to working for the Lord. His music is uplifting and contains words of encouragement for those who are seeking a spiritual power from the Lord.

Rambling Rose: Tony Williams Jazz Festival; A Labor Day Music Barbecue

— Hello everyone! I just want to say happy Labor Day weekend to all of you. I hope everyone has a safe and fun weekend!

By the time you read this, I will already be in Philadelphia, getting ready to do my thing at the Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival as I have done for the past 24 years. I am sorry I won’t be able to attend any of the local events this weekend, but I wish you much success and I hope your event is well attended.

I know many of you will be gathering with family and friends at your homes, in your backyards and perhaps the parks with boom boxes jumping with your favorite music— and that’s okay! But you know me— I love live entertainment, so I will be at a jazz music barbecue in Philadelphia. The Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival as always is Labor Day Weekend, August 29 to September 1 at the Philadelphia Airport Embassy Suites, 9000 Bartram Avenue in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania.

Bill Cosby is a regular fixture every year doing stand-up comedy or playing drums with his hometown buddies band, called “Bill Cosby & The Reunion Band” at the Tony Williams Jazz Festival on Labor Day weekend August 29th thru September 1st at the Philadelphia Airport Embassy Suites.

The entertainment is always awesome. The menu for the barbecue cookout is quite fitting for the occasion. The musicians’ cooking at this year’s cook-out will be Walter Clark with his buttery tenor sax; Kenny Gates will play sweet sounds on the piano while Tony Williams gets saucy with the tenor sax. Don’t forget vocalist Barbara Walker whose luscious voice rounds out the group like a good peach cobbler tops off a summer barbecue.

Members of the Council of Jazz Advocates and co-founders of the Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival are: the late Ronnie Wells, President, Thelma Anderson and the late Mildred Twitty.

The music is jumping, the grills are smoking, but wait a minute… In comes funny man Bill Cosby with T-bone steaks. He’s doing stand-up comedy while beating a snare drum. Okay, some of the guests are down home folks, so the cookout needs a little Frank Bey for some bluesy collard greens. His band throws in the ham-hocks for some extra seasoning.

Putting the icing on the cake, the chief, Tony Williams has everybody take off their shoes while he plays some down home blues. While fixing me a drink, Miss Justine’s Ensemble sings her song. Hosts Rosalee Boyer and husband Chris make sure everyone is happy, while the co-founder, Thelma Anderson oversees vendors with a smile on her face. You can still join the party by calling 215-364-4500 to get your ticket and make reservations. The “After the Festival Party” is the “Blue Monday Jam” at LaRose Jazz Club, 5531 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa. I will see you there!

In Baltimore, “Homeless Support Services” is hosting a “Fundraiser Cabaret” on August 30 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Pikesville Town Hall located at 40 East Sudbrook Lane in Pikesville, Maryland. Music will be played by DJ Jammon Jess with free beer, food and setups. Don’t forget to BYOB your favorite beverage. For more information, call 443-604-6651.

RAMBLING ROSE: Support Our People in the Community

Hello Folks! Are we enjoying this beautiful weather? I know I am. Honey Child! This is my time of the year. I have been running my little butt all over the place and having a ball. I am mostly enjoying book signings for my new book. Thanks to many of your invitations, I am doing about five book signings a week. I am having such a good time meeting so many of my fans who have been reading my columns for the past 27 years. Yes, it has been a true pleasure and will continue to be so.

I hope all you daddies enjoyed your weekend last week. I hope the ladies in your life treated you like a king.

There are other things I am so grateful for. One of them is being able to run a foundation that I founded 23 years ago called the Rosa Pryor Music Scholarship Fund, Inc. and giving over a hundred musically gifted underprivileged children the opportunity to shine.

Last week, the Executive Director of the Children’s Scholarship Committee, Dr. Donna Hollie attended a performance at Harford County Community College by Ian McDaniel, who won a RPMSF Scholarship in 2012. He performed a duet with his teacher from Peabody entitled “Hyacinthe Klose” which was followed by his solo performance of music by Bach. He also played “Voice of the Spirit in My Soul” with the Harford Community College Band and Charlie Parker’s “Donna Lee.” He accompanied Debbie Levy, a member of his church, on “Goin” Up Yonder” and the call & response between the two was outstanding. Accompanying Ian on drums was a brother of O’Donell “Butch” Levy who presented Ian with an alto sax from O’Donnell’s collection of instruments. The evening ended with a sing-along to Pharrell Williams’ “Happy.” I am so proud of this young man.

Vincent Street Entertainment producers, Vincent and “PJ” Allen will host a musical extravaganza that will blow your mind on Saturday, June 21st at the Jewish Community Center Gordon Center, 3508 Gwynnbrook Avenue, in Owings Mills. The event stars the legendary Bobbi Humphrey as she celebrates the 40th anniversary of her Satin Doll album. Also performing Corinthia Cromwell, Cyrus Chestnut, Sean Taylor, Cyril Greene, Chelsey Green, Ashley Alexander, Carmelita Simone and the special guest is yours truly, Rosa Pryor. Oh! Please don’t get too excited, no, I will not be performing, those days are over. I will have my new book on hand. For more information, go to: www.jcc.org/gordon-center/gordon-center.

“Jesse and The Crew” will host the “Friday Nite Oldies” at Caton Castle Appreciation Nite on Friday, June 20th. Admission is half price. There will be food, dancing and some good ol’ grown folk’s music. The color scheme is black & white. Come out and party from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m.

RAMBLING ROSE: From my words to your ears

Hello everyone, it looks like it may be a beautiful weekend for us to go out and have some fun. “From my words to your ears,” just follow my lead and take notes. I have some very interesting things to tell you.

My good friend, James Hamlin the owner of a fantastic bakery on the Avenue, is not only an advocate for the community, but he is a baker, that’s right! He personally prepares and cooks his own rolls and pastries right on the premises in his glass building located at 2229 Pennsylvania Avenue— The Avenue Bakery. His rolls my dear, make you want to slap your grandmother. If you remember the home cooked rolls that Sampson’s use to bake, then double that and go get a dozen of Jim’s rolls. I promise you that you will keep coming back.

Hamlin is a strong supporter of the Pennsylvania Avenue community and he shows this by offering free Courtyard Summer Music Series of Jazz and live entertainment right in the bakery’s courtyard. On Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Courtyard Summer Music Series and unveiling the Greg Tyler Collection on “A Night at the Royal Theater” includes live entertainment featuring Jim Dow on tenor sax and his band. It is free all summer long featuring performances by Baltimore’s most consummate musicians and performers with light fare and drinks available for purchase throughout the afternoon along with yours’ truly, Rosa “Rambling Rose” Pryor autographing her new book. I will have both of my books available, entitled “African American Community, History & Entertainment in Maryland.” The cost of the book is only $25.00. I will see you there.

I attended the first “Royal Theatre Amateur Night,” hosted by The Bambou Entertainment Complex, 229 N. Franklintown Road last Monday night and it was great. Contestants from the Baltimore area performed by singing with a live band, called, Vizion Band 33.2. The mistress of ceremony was the one and only Ms. Maybell the comedian herself, and John Carrington, from Heaven 600 and the puppet man was the mascot who “boooooooed” you from the stage with his crazy dance and hickory stick. This fun event takes place every Monday night starting at 8:30 p.m. So if you are a karaoke fan or think you can sing to win a recording contract, check it out. For more information; call James Jones, the producer at 443-531-7138. I will see you there.

Well, my dear friends, I am out of time and out of space. Enjoy this great weather and guys, in case I don’t talk to you before next week, have a very happy Father’s Day.

Memorial Day Weekend: Dedicated to the ones we’ve lost

Hello everyone, this weekend I am going to dedicate to the memories to those we loved and lost so recently. We want to cherish what they meant to us when they were still with us and we can do that by celebrating with friends and family. We want to believe they are in a better place. I want you to remember this poem by Joe Sakeagak:

“When Tomorrow Starts without Me”

When tomorrow starts without me,

And I’m not there to see,

All filled with tears for me,

I wish so much you wouldn’t cry

The way you did today,

While thinking of the many things,

We didn’t get to say.

I know how much you love me,

As much as I love you,

And each time that you think of me,

I know you’ll miss me too;

But when tomorrow starts without me,

Please try to understand,

That an angel came and called my name,

And said my place was ready,

In heaven far above

And that I’d have to leave behind

All those I dearly love.

I thought of all the yesterdays,

The good ones and the bad,

I thought of all the love we shared,

And all the fun we had,

If I could relive yesterday,

Just even for a while,

I’d say good-bye and kiss you

And maybe see you smile.

But then I fully realized,

That this could never be,

For emptiness and memories,

Would take the place of me,

So when tomorrow starts without me,

Don’t think we’re far apart,

For every time you think of me,

I’m right here, in your heart.

So my dear friends hold your head up and have fun. Enjoy your weekend, have a party, a cook-out, go to a show, go to the grave site and lay some beautiful, colorful flowers or NOT! Go and do something fun and my friends, most of all, listen to some happy music. It could be jazz, gospel, R&B, line dance or whatever makes you feel good. I will get you started with a couple of events.
