The Social Security Administration has been headquartered in Woodlawn for more than 55 years, yet the agency’s main operations building has seen no major renovations or systems upgrades since it was built in 1959.
Senator Barbara Mikulski announced $150 million in federal funds have been secured for major upgrades to the Altmeyer building. The renovations will address health and safety issues, meet current accessibility standards, improve space utilization and provide a comfortable, energy efficient working environment that meets 21st century standards.
The Social Security Administration is headquartered in Woodlawn. With 11,000 workers, it is Baltimore County’s single largest employer.
“This significant investment ensures that Baltimore County remains home to the Social Security Administration for decades to come,” said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. “We thank Senator Mikulski for her hard work and commitment to keeping these important jobs here.”
