BALTIMORE — The Baltimore City Department of General Services (DGS) announces that the Civil War Museum will host a series of historical reenactments by Frederick Douglass impersonator Steven Cole in honor of the 150th anniversary of Emancipation in Maryland.
Cole will recreate Douglass’s famous “A Friendly Word to Maryland” speech on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Orchard Street Church located at 512 Orchard Street in Baltimore; Sunday November 16, 2014 at 9 a.m. at the Centennial Caroline Street Church located at 1029 E. Monument Street in Baltimore; and Sunday November 16, 2914 11 a.m. at the Sharp Street Church located at 1206 Etting Street in Baltimore.
The Sharp Street Church and the Centennial Caroline Street Church are two of the historic locations at which Douglass spoke in November 1864. In the speech, Douglass simultaneously celebrated Maryland’s abolition of slavery and urged Marylanders to enfranchise the African-American population.
The program is sponsored by DGS’s partner, the Friends of President Street Station, a non-profit organization, which leases and operates the Civil War Museum.
